The Influence of Suggestopedia on the Motivation of English Learning of Higher Education Students in Indonesia

Suggestopedia, a learning method developed by Georgi Lozanov in the 1970s, is based on the principles of positive suggestion, relaxation, and the use of classical music to create a learning environment that is free from psychological barriers. This method emphasizes three main phases, namely decoding (presenting material with varying intonation), concert sessions (presenting material accompanied by music), and activation (reinforcement through creative activities). In Indonesia, English learning in universities often faces the challenge of low student motivation caused by language anxiety, perception of difficulty, and a teaching approach that is still predominantly oriented towards formal grammar. Motivation to learn English is a crucial factor because English language competence determines the competitiveness of graduates in the global job market. Theoretical and empirical research shows that suggestopedia is able to lower students’ affective filters, thus opening up space for increased intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. By creating a fun and supportive classroom atmosphere, this method allows students to view English not as a mere academic burden, but as a means of self-expression and self-development. The heterogeneous context of Indonesian higher education, both in terms of socioeconomic background and students’ initial abilities, makes the application of suggestopedia relevant to bridge the motivation gap between individuals. Through a holistic approach, suggestopedia not only focuses on mastering linguistic material, but also on strengthening students’ self-confidence that they are able to master English effectively.

The theory of learning motivation, especially the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) put forward by Deci and Ryan, explains that intrinsic motivation grows when the need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness is met. Suggestopedia directly supports these three needs. The concert session phase with baroque or classical music creates a relaxation condition that increases psychological security, so that students feel more empowered (competence) in receiving language input. The use of role-play and creative activities in the activation phase provide a space for students to express themselves without fear of mistakes. Meanwhile, a collaborative classroom atmosphere strengthens the relatability between students. In Indonesia, a number of empirical studies in universities show that the application of suggestopedia is consistently able to increase English learning motivation scores. Students who previously tended to be passive and avoided oral participation became more enthusiastic because the pressure of formal evaluation was minimized. This approach is also in line with Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis theory, where the reduction of language anxiety opens up a more optimal path of receiving inputs. Thus, suggestopedia not only functions as a teaching method, but also as a psychological intervention that reconstructs students’ perceptions of the English learning process. Indonesian students are generally familiar with teacher-centered learning patterns and assessment systems that emphasize grammatical accuracy. Therefore, the integration of suggestopedia must be carried out gradually, starting with the introduction of music and a brief relaxation technique at the beginning of the lecture, then continuing with the presentation of material through suggestive intonation. The results of observations in several English study programs show that students who take suggestopedia-based classes for one semester experience an increase in interest in reading authentic texts, willingness to speak in front of the class, and perseverance in completing independent assignments. Factors that contribute to this increase in motivation include reduced fear of making mistakes, the presence of entertainment elements through music, and the provision of positive affirmative feedback. In addition, suggestopedia is able to bridge differences in visual, auditory, and kinesthetic student learning styles through a combination of visual, auditory, and movement activities. In the midst of increasingly common online and hybrid learning challenges, suggestopedia’s principles can still be adapted through the selection of appropriate background music, the use of voice modulation by lecturers, and project-based creative assignments that emphasize free expression.

The influence of suggestopedia on motivation to learn English is not uniform across all students. Students with high levels of anxiety tend to benefit more because this method systematically lowers their affective filters. Conversely, students who already have strong intrinsic motivation continue to feel improvement through the enrichment of a more enjoyable and meaningful learning experience. Further analysis shows that the components of music and positive suggestions play a significant role in forming positive attitudes towards English. This positive attitude further strengthens the behavioral intention to continue learning outside the classroom, for example through the consumption of English-language media or participation in conversational communities. At the institutional level, the implementation of suggestopedia requires the readiness of lecturers to manage classes dynamically as well as the support of simple infrastructure in the form of audio devices. When these conditions are met, suggestopedia is able to create a classroom climate that supports students’ self-efficacy, i.e. confidence that they are able to achieve their targeted English competencies. This increase in self-efficacy is a strong predictor of long-term learning perseverance, which in turn contributes to better academic achievement.

In conclusion, suggestopedia has been proven to have a positive influence on the motivation to learn English of university students in Indonesia through the mechanism of reducing anxiety, fulfilling basic psychological needs, and creating a supportive learning environment. This method is relevant to be integrated into the English curriculum because it is able to answer the motivation challenges that have been the main obstacles. Practical recommendations include training lecturers on suggestopedia techniques, the preparation of teaching materials that combine elements of music and creative activities, and periodic evaluations of changes in student motivation. Further research needs to be conducted with a stricter experimental design and a wider sample to strengthen the generalization of findings. With consistent and adaptive application to local contexts, suggestopedia has the potential to be one of the strategic approaches in improving the quality of English learning in Indonesian universities, so that graduates have adequate global communication competencies and lifelong learning motivation.
